The cheaper ones are a sort of spinning-disc thing, like a food processor, as I recall. We bought one of those, found out that it completely failed to shred anything, and took it back the next day to swap it for the more expensive species.
Given that a fair amount of our shredding needs involved firethorn, which is really not something you want to be trying to do by hand....
