My parents have one and I think they are great. All the responsiveness of a gas cooker, easy to clean, very thin so drawers below them are practical. I believe you need to make sure you have the right pans - I think the my parents said they just tested with a magnet whether they'd work or not, but I suspect that most stuff probably works, just some that doesn't.
I defintiely want an induction hob myself. They are great. :)
I bake bread and T makes cakes and things, so I don't think we could do without the real oven. Interesting idea though, they do take up a lot of space.
We got one as part of last summer's renovation madness, as we're not on gas. It's excellent - very quick and effective, and safer in that only the pan base gets heated. Only drawback was having to replace some of our old, non-magnetic saucepans. "+1", as I believe the kiddies say these days.
Sorry for tardy reply. We had the whole place rewired and the electrician put the hob on its own circuit (and the oven on another), so I guess this corroborates what you've heard.
Mm, I've since heard there are a few 13A ones now, but most are 30 or 32A. Oh well, I suspect a certain amount of rewiring was going to be needed anyway.
