- 394 - Battle of the Frigidus: The Christian Roman Emperor Theodosius I defeats and kills the pagan usurper Eugenius and his Frankish magister militum Arbogast. (I've got no idea if this was important or not, but what great names they have!)
- 1936 - The last surviving member of the thylacine species, Benjamin, dies alone in his cage at the Hobart Zoo in Tasmania. (Poor fella. There's some film of him turning restlessly around his concrete / steel cage -- not nice.)
- 1997 - The funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales, at Westminster Abbey draws large crowds. (We had a big party that weekend. Not to celebrate that, but because it was my 30th birthday.)
- 1879 - Max Schreck, German actor ("Count Orlock" in Murnau's Nosferatu)
- 1943 - Roger Waters, bassist, songwriter, and previous leader of Pink Floyd
- 1966 - Hendrik Verwoerd, Prime Minister of South Africa (his assassin said he was told to do it by "a large worm in his stomach")
- 1998 - Akira Kurosawa, Japanese film director
