Firefox 3 took me about 3 hours at work to get used to (and re-skinning it, which I'd never done with 2). I now like it as much as 2, but I don't know if I like it more (apart from the allegedly smaller memory footprint, which I do like).
I never really used FF2 much - until very recently my browser of choice was Safari (home) and old skool Moz (work). I changed mostly because the work wiki works better in FF. I happened to change at about the time 3 came out, so I went straight onto that, so I have no real basis for comparison (no idea which features are new in 3, for example).
I upgraded within hours of returning to the UK, and am very happy with it. I have it loaded with addons, and the only annoyance is older ones breaking. No rendering issues.
Yes, lets. I'm not as fannish as I used to be though, I warn you - just up with the fannish zeitgeist. How do you know undyingking? He seems to be the only place where our flists overlap.
Oh, I don't mind fannish or not. Mine's just a hodgepodge of my stream of consciousness babbling anyway. I know him from brits_americans. Can't remember the exact circumstances of our meeting though. I'm a bit of a space cadet from time to time.
I have no interest in software so I upgraded to 3 with a view to deleting it if it caused me any trouble (for some reason I can't be bothered to investigate IE won't update on my work machine). FF3 has caused me no problems or irritations whatsoever making it score extremely highly on my list of desirable software.
I upgraded to 3 and I really like it. The greatest single improvement has got to be the bookmark toolbar. You can just click on a button to go to your favorite page. I used to click through my history to find links that I visit often (wikipedia, imdb, dictionary.com, etc.) but now all I have to do is one click on the bookmark toolbar!
Other than that, I haven't noticed any other difference. I don't do themes or skins or add ons (except for really basic stuff like media player or flash), so I have no idea how it functions with all that.
Performance wise, it was running great. Then the last few days it has been running really slow, but then I took the dvd out of my dvd drive and it sped up. Weird, huh? That is probably not a mozilla issue. It may be a weird vista issue, or the fact that I've recently been monkeying around with cracked dvd ripping software. Anyway it's running fine now so I assume it's just my problem.
I say go for firefox 3. Before I could have gone back to IE anytime, but now I'm addicted to this bookmark toolbar.
Oh, hm. Must have been an add on. Since I generally don't go add on shopping, I certainly would have missed it. Guess you could upgrade or not, and probably won't make much difference.
No, it's built in to FF2, but maybe disabled by default.
You presumably don't need to know this now you have 3, but for anyone who does:
1) Right-click the toolbar and check "bookmarks toolbar". 2) The toolbar shows the bookmarks in "Bookmarks Toolbar Folder", which appears as a subdivision of the regular bookmarks. So move some bookmarks into that. 3) Profit.
There are certainly plenty of TMP features that I don't use, so I guess if FF3's brought in my core set, I would be fine. The ones I would require are: * remember list of recently-closed tabs, and be able to re-open them; * options around merging FF windows together; * choice of whether or not to focus new tabs depending on how they've been opened; * open all JS popups in new tabs rather than windows; * multi-row; * middle-click refreshes tab; * the tab context menu; * the session restore manager (better than FF2's built-in one).
I find it much preferable to 2. It is smaller, faster, less leaky, and it has additional functions that I previously added with add-ins that were not entirely to my taste. I particularly like the smarter navigation bar.
I have had my FF2 pretty leaky at various times, but always traceable to an extension rather than the core program. It certainly does run slowly at times, though.
In what sort of way is the navigation bar smarter?
