I've just this afternoon started wearing a new pair of glasses, in which the left eye prescription has changed slightly. I now have a headache, and it also seems to be making my nose run on that side. Is this normal? I've not had a change in prescription since I was about 15, so can't remember much about what it was like previously.

Is there any good way of 'breaking in' new glasses in such a way that you don't get a headache at all? I guess if there is, working at a computer (which is what I have been doing) probably isn't it...

OTOH glasses technology seems to have moved on somewhat since I got my last ones however long ago, and these ones seem about half the weight despite being cheaper. And they make me look even more dashingly handsome than before, if you can believe that.

Yes this is pretty normal (apart from the runny nose, which I suspect is a cold - everyone else in the UK seems to have one this week, so that's the smart way to bet). Take all the regular breaks from the screen that you know you really should but never do, take a painkiller if necessary to stop yourself getting into a headache vicious circle, and the odds are that you'll have no problem at all when you put them on tomorrow morning.

The headache could be due to your eyes adjusting to the new prescription or the new focusing point of the lenses if you changed frames.

If the headache is due to how the specs are sitting on your face then it's back to the optician PDQ for a free adjustment. Sometimes it can take a few attempts to get them sitting right and it's often down to the skills and experience of the "fitter". (I have lots of fun with springy titanium frames)

I can't help on the nasal drip.

the only time new glasses gave me headaches was when they, or the prescription were badly wrong, and I had to abandon them. Can you take old and new pairs in to confirm the strength of each?

Wait another couple of years when you'll get varifocals if you're really lucky :) They took me a week to live with and about 3 weeks to get really used to, and in the meantime I had lost my existing glasses, and so just had to get on with it.

They feel normal now, and when I wear my reading glsses the world goes all peculiar!

I've had much the same experience with new glasses (except for the runny ose).

Like others have said, check the fit, especially nose & behind ears.

Try going for long walks until you get used to them, I think looking long-distance means you will adapt more quickly. (It works for me, I'm about -2.5 short-sighted).

Clean new glasses often! Smudgy can cause headaches, especially reading.

You were quite right, they've been fine today!

They feel like they fit well, but my old specs were so out of shape that anything fairly approximate would seem an improvement. I'll give myself a few days to get fussy about the fit and maybe pop back in after Easter to get it tweaked.

They did that for me when I picked them up (maybe for their own reassurance as much as anything!)

The change is not in the strength but in the cylindricality (or whatever it's called) -- that lens now curves laterally around the eye more than the old one did.

Mm, T has recently reached the stage of having to take her glasses off to read, and is currently resisting doing anything about it!

No long walks in this weather! They'll have to cope with staring out of the window every now and then ;-)

Can't offer advice on glasses, don't wear them but if family traits are anything to go by (and I think in this case I am going to pay attention to them) I will be at the age of forty or so.

However, I can comment that you *are* dashingly handsome, and always have been. I felt it should be said as everyone else was offering useful advice about glasses and not mentioning this at all.

Heh, glad someone picked up on that! -- you further confirm your excellent taste ;-)
