Audition piece?

The daughter of a friend is going for an 'interview' for a place on a drama course at Edinburgh Uni, and as part of it she's supposed to prepare a song, which will be accompanied by piano. She's a bit thrown by this as they've provided no guidance as to what type of song, music, etc, and apparently the relevant office that might explain it is closed for Easter up until the day before her interview. Do any of you have experience of such things / family members, friends etc who've done it, who can shed a bit of light on what sort of thing they're probably looking for?

I managed inadvertently to shock my interviewers at one Oxford college simply by not being smartly dressed. They spent a good ten minutes commenting bemusedly on the various badges on my denim jacket.

Was it the one you got into ?

(I turned up to all my interviews wearing combats. It wasn't at all inadvertant, either.)

I'd dressed the same for my first choice, on the basis of "either they'll like me or not, no matter what I'm wearing" -- and they didn't seem to be bothered at all. So I was a bit surprised when the second-choice lot, the following day, reacted like that. Fortunately, the first ones decided to offer me a place: the other place seemed a bit stuffier generally.
