Stanford looking at a Twenty20 stretch
Feb. 17th, 2009 05:43 pmHoo boy, the SEC has just charged Allen Stanford with a wide spectrum of large and complex frauds. "Shocking magnitude" is the phrase used.
That might cast a bit of a shadow over the vast sums he's supposed to be pouring into English cricket, might it not? And as for the poor old West Indies...
Can I now smugly point out that I vehemently opposed cricket pimping itself out for his millions, from day one? To be honest, I didn't suspect he might be a crook, I just felt he was a bit of a smarmy git who wanted to aggrandize himself mercilessly at the expense of a valuable tradition and culture. But irrational prejudice can sometimes be proved accurate.
Of course, it may be that he's proved blameless of all charges, in which case I will apologise handsomely. But I'm not gong to spend too much tme working on the exact wording of that just yet.
